Husband made it back safe and sound from Japan today, so my attention is mostly focused on getting him de-jetlagged and comfy.
Oh, and a little thing called Resident Evil 2 Remake came out and happens to be something I have been massively looking forward to for some time.
As a result, today I shall share my work on the Principalities of Nyret, and take solace in the fact that despite the sorting out I found I needed to do this week, I’ve managed to pull myself back on track over yesterday and today, and the Compendium is sitting at a comfortable 50 pages long!
The country of Nyret, just south of the equatorial region of Hevna, is a medium-sized country bordering the Imyran desert. Both blessed and cursed by year-long warmth, the country is primarily known for two things: the ancient ruins out in the wastes all over the country, and for its horses.
Historically, Nyret is known as one of the major branching points for human expansion and global domination after the fall of the ancient Helzetian empire across the sea, but despite this shared heritage with all the peoples of the world, Nyret was a cut off and poor country for a very long time.
The discovery of oil and the burgeoning uses of such has catapulted Nyret back to world attention within the last century, as has its native culture and love for horses, which are now highly sought after in certain circles.
In technicality, Nyret is a loose coalition of smaller Princedoms, though the nature of the changing world has seen the bonds between the often quarrelsome Princes strengthen in response to foreign interest in Nyrenese investments.

Unlike some of the other desert and arid nations on Hevna, the Nyrenese do not have a particular issue with the Nagan races. This is partially because the two do not cross paths too extensively and keep to themselves in the more ideal areas of the country for each race, but also because of the history of the nation.
After initial colonization by Men following the fall of the ancient Helzetian empire, the old religion remained entrenched for a long time, including its animal gods and spirits. As a result, the Nagu of Nyret were treated with a degree of fearful veneration. The co-existence simply continued even after religion in the region began to change among Mankind, and in some places, the two races will trade local fauna for the betterment of domesticated strains on both sides,
Water: Nyret is a usually dry country, and thus is very reliant on the few water sources throughout the country to sustain its population. While Aether Storms passing over the country often refill the iconic Bul lake and water sources around Masik, the Nyrenese are cautious in their water management for those long periods of drought between Storms.
Mountainous regions provide some small rivers and streams to the local populations, however, a degree of rationing is common across the country, legislated by the local Prince’s to make the best use of whatever quantity is available. In stark exception, the island provinces around Ipsa have no such restrictions, as the weather passing inland often drops moisture on the Nyr islands more in keeping with a tropical environment, than an arid one.
Food: Nyret doesn’t have the largest stretch of agricultural land, nevertheless it had been self-sustaining for many years. Even with a recent population boom in the last century, though, which has pushed Nyret into importing a fair degree of goods, the offset is strong considering the wealth Nyret can export into the world.
The Nyrenese favor tropical fruits among their homegrown crops, as well as hard grains and the farming of both ostrich and orox, which do well in the sandy environment. Fishing supplements the diet of coastal communities and the Islanders.
Law Enforcement: Each of the seven Principalities manage their own region in regards to enforcement of the law, while the law itself is set down by the current ruling Prince. For most provinces, this means a standing police force for major settlements, and usually some form of traveling judge arrangement for handling the needs of more remote villages, when local justice cannot be organized. The law, in general, would be familiar to most Hevnan occupants, but there are a few unique features to Nyret peacekeeping. Mostly, these details come in stringent laws about horse management, voting rights for elections, resource management, and abuse of the ancient ruins around the country. Nyret enforces the death penalty in some matters, including the illegal sale of antiquities by avoiding the governmental channels.
Fire: Fire prevention is of major concern around agricultural areas, with businesses dealing in flammable materials often employing their own fire officers to keep safe their investments. Fire can also be a problem in larger cities, especially where reeds are used to make roofing material, so it is common for each Principality to maintain a fire department of some description in the event of an accident. Three of the Principalities (Usar. Mahit and Kor) do little more than this as water is more available, while the other four mandate Weavers must be present with due resources, in case of an emergency.
Utilities: Gas is easy to come by in Nyret, and with the explosion onto the world stage in rich goods, steam has spread across Nyret’s Princedoms at an astounding rate. Nyret has one of the busiest rail networks in all of Hevna to manage its goods between dock and airports, and with the rails has come expansion of critical services into many more remote areas, prompting the construction of new towns. Most residents inside the major towns have access to steam, water, gas and waste disposal, while things are more rudimentary for Nyret’s nomadic population in smaller towns.
Nyret has fought many small wars within its own borders, mostly between individual Princedoms, or skirmishes of hierarchy within a single Princedom. In consequence, the country has always had plenty of armed forces to its name, but little in the way of unified training and tactics.
The more modern times now affecting Nyret have begun to change this with a dedicated standing force now present (primarily used in policing the borders and ports) and foreign tactics and war protocols making their way into training.
Nyret has not had much of a history of war with its neighboring nations, due to how poor it was once seen as. Now that the country is steadily working its way up the economy, the Nyrenese have begun both expanding their forces in number and scope, with particular focus on their mounted camel soldiers, best suited for defending Nyret’s sandy borders. The current military topic of the moment among the Princes concerns air technology, as the potential threat of other northern nations pose is becoming more recognized. For now, alliances via marriage and trade deal have Nyret in a strong position, but far from ‘safe’.
Horses: In the centuries since Nyret began recording its history, horses have only grown in importance to the country. While camels provide a more… natural… fit for the desert environs, the speed of the horse and their use as companions and food to the nomads has caused them to be built into the bedrock of Nyret culture. Fierce competition between tribes (which became the Princedoms) and dedicated breeding of the best stock has resulted in the form the Nyret horse takes today – beasts of deep chests, arced necks and smaller heads, with a characteristic dip in the muzzle. These horses are fast, proud and powerful, features the Nyrenese cherish, as do those foreigners who have seen the value to Nyrets patron animal and begun paying very high prices to export some of these creatures. Officially, the country has not sold a single stallion overseas, but rumor says one has nevertheless appeared somewhere in Wessenland…
Pearls: While gas and oil have propelled Nyret’s economy to new heights recently, the Nyr islands and waters around Nyret’s east coast have long provided another source of money – pearls. Pearl diving has been pursued in Nyret as long as people and Nagu have lived there. Fierce rights are protected in diving spots around the country, while oysters are cultivated by the Tyakonagu of Kist and Ysa (a trick Men have yet to master). Pearl diving is certainly what gave the Princedom of Mahit its power, and the elite of Nyret proudly wear pearls as a sign of status.
Building Materials: Clay for brick making is easy enough to come by in many parts of the country, and for tile making. Reeds are also often used in roofing, as is stone in mountainous regions. Despite the availability of such materials, Nyret still imports plenty of stone form Arlatene, for the higher quality of their materials, and the more practiced and expert craftsmanship of the norths craftsmen.
Healthcare: Healthcare is a personal issue for most of Nyret. Some of the plants native to the desert have medicinal properties, but Weavers historically demanded high prices for the services until more recent times. Now, the Nyrenese import medicine and medical expertise from abroad, as well as training their own populace in more high tech solutions. Papaver is also grown in small amounts on the Nyr islands and distributed to various private medical companies in Nyret to aid in pain relief.
Disaster Relief: While Aether Storms are as much a problem to Nyret when they pass through as anywhere else, they tend to bring with them a familiar problem to the Nyrenese, even without aether – sandstorms. Most settlements have shelter on high ground in the event of such storms, and locals all wear clothing suited to repelling flying, stinging sand, including goggles for eye protection. Naturally, travel into the dunes takes these sorts of storms into considerations too.
In the case of more eventful storms and disasters, the shelters are still a good option for safety, and allow law enforcement and rescue services to find and aid the most amount of people in the least amount of time when they are used. Repair of personal property damaged in storms, however, is usually the responsibility of the owner, though the government has been known to give suitable aid on occasion, depending on which Prince is in power at any given time.
Unique Imports and Exports: Nyret exports gas, oil, pearls, dates, exotic fruits, and horses as its majority to the international market. Of these, gas and pearls garner the most pure revenue, but it is on oil and horses that Nyrets reputation better rests. For imports, Nyret favors rail technology from Wessenland, stone from Arlatene, medical supplies from Rasaal, magus globes from Helze and exchanges general goods with Bazel.
Docks: Nyret’s eastern coast and the Nyr islands sport docks anywhere habitation and harbor interconnect. Nualim, Ebris and Ipsa host the largest docks, for international arrivals and trade. The west coast, however, is much sparser due to the unpredictable tides and storms that plague it. Known as the Wreckers Reef for all the sunken ships and ancient ruins off the current coastline, only the reclusive Tyakonagu make any kind of living off the western stretch of coastline.
Airports: Nyret has a few relatively small airports near its major settlements, but air travel and trade has not seen nearly as huge a dedication of resources as the rail and sea networks. Each of the Princedoms maintains a private airstrip and ship at their respective home city, with most providing some provision for incoming foreign visitors and merchants, but the systems still leave much to be desired. For now.
State Religion: The Men of Nyret practice the Faith of the Lights, but with a much older twist thrown in. A people descended of ancient Helze, the old religion still holds some sway in Nyret’s festivals and celebrations, as well as their devotions. Despite the currently accepted forms given to most of the Lights, in Nyret, the old animal gods of Helze take the place of these depictions, effectively mixing the old with the new.
The Nagu of Nyret, as most of the Nagan races, tend to favor their own brands of Lodaism within their species’ ethos, though for those Nagu who regularly have contact with Men, their Dragons sometimes also take the aspect of the old animal gods.
Terrorism: Plenty, if small scale. The Princedoms have a history of subverting and sabotaging each other, especially in the run-up to elections every ten years. The current incumbent leader, Prince Zaamun the Fourth of Mahit, has quelled this somewhat for his association with Nyrets recent boom, his good relationship with his eldest son (and Arlatene, through a marital engagement) and the fact that his home city, Ipsa, is hard to attack as it is located on one of the Nyr islands. This said it is not uncommon for disgruntled citizens to raid caravans and trains, join outlaw bands, or outright firebomb relevant institutions and businesses in bigger towns.
Alliances: Nyret has a consistent if strained, alliance with Bazel to its south, born out of necessity between the two nations. Nyret also trades with most of the other southern Imyran nations, Helze, and Gita across the sea, as well as Wessenland, Arlatene, and Rasaal in the north. In the case of Arlatene, the current government has a particularly strong tie due to the impending marriage of Prince Zaamun’s son, Prince Zaamil, to Arlatene’s eldest Princess, Edwina Ruthersford.
Manner of Rule: Nyret was once multiple kingdoms as Men expanded across the country after the fall of Helze. In time, many of these settlements too fell and were lost to the desert, either through war or other means. Eventually, seven Kingdoms remained, and were united by Kor the Warrior into an uneasy alliance. Fights for dominance among the Princedoms continued for many years after the ‘unification’, until outside pressure and internal growth molded matters into their current state.
Every decade, on Guiding Day, the men of Nyret vote for the next chief among Prince’s to lead the country, with the other six Princes forming the council of advisers until the next election cycle. So far, this system has reduced civil unrest and disobedience from older levels of violence… but no system is ever perfect.
Horses form a vital role to the Nyrenese, and multiple laws govern their care and breeding. As a result, offense between individuals is often rectified by the exchange of horses, while the mistreatment of another’s animal can even carry the death penalty.
Of those who can afford the luxury of a horse, disputes, quarrels, and even engagements are reconciled and arranged by horses races, with certain elite groups meeting for such at the same time every year.
A result of this, worthy of note, is that all Nyret horses, stallions and mares, are considered to have been born on the same day, despite their actual birth date. The national Nyret day of the horse, therefore, is Girstary 1st, a national holiday across the country.
